The price of the world's largest cryptocurrency by market value fell below the psychological support line of $35,000 late on Wednesday evening as Russian President Vladimir Putin called for military action in Ukraine.
According to Blockworks.co/prices, Bitcoin fell almost 9% in 24 hours. Many leading digital assets are trading at their lowest levels since January 24th.
Putin, appearing live on television around 10 p.m. ET, said he had ordered the Russian military to move into Ukraine's Donbass region. Reporters also in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv Explosions observed.
Russia on Wednesday declared Ukraine's Donetsk and Luhansk regions in the Donbass region independent, drawing strong condemnation from Western powers. Putin said the decision to move to these areas was a response to threats emanating from Ukraine.
The Russian president warned other countries that any attempt to interfere in Russia's affairs would lead to "consequences they have never seen before," ABC News reported.
Just before Putin began his speech, the price of Bitcoin began falling below $36,600 and continued to fall to a low of $34,322, exchange data shows. The hourly chart shows a flurry of seller volume tracking its descent, with little resistance coming from Bitcoin buying action.

Earlier on Wednesday, US Pentagon spokesman John Kirby called Russian forces continued to mass along Ukraine's borders and placed themselves "at an advanced stage of readiness to act and carry out military actions."
A sell-off in stocks and crypto was seen on Wednesday, extending the trend to lower prices as the S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed -1.84% and -2.6%, respectively.
Ukraine's foreign minister tweeted on Thursday that Putin had launched a "full-scale" invasion against his country and that cities in the region were "under strikes."
Investors have continued to closely monitor developments in Ukraine, with both traditional and digital asset markets reacting strongly. Eyes are now on the US and its allies over their response to the growing crisis.
Gold continues to hold water, rising 2.6% on the day - above $1,950 an ounce - while WTI crude oil is up 7.3% and trading at $99 a barrel. Meanwhile, crypto assets are swimming around in a sea of red, with Cardano, Avalanche, Polygon and Dogecoin the top 20 by market value taking the biggest hit, down between -15% and -17% on the day.
