Argentina: Lawyer Urges Presidential Candidate to Adopt Bitcoin
A prominent Argentine lawyer has recommended that a leading presidential candidate abandon his plans to dollarize the country and adopt a cryptocurrency instead. Javier Milei, a right-wing politician described by some as populist, is known for his support of Bitcoin (BTC). Last year, he was embroiled in a cryptocurrency-related controversy.
However, Milei's plan to dollarize Argentina's economy has drawn criticism from some. Carlos Maslatón, a well-known lawyer and BTC advocate, called Milei's plans a "joke" and emphasized that the dollar is being imposed by force while Bitcoin is the only voluntary currency.
Maslatón, who also had political ambitions, failed in his attempt to win his party's endorsement. Milei currently has a support rate of around 18% in the polls, while Sergio Massa, the leading candidate, has 10% more support.
The debate surrounding the introduction of Bitcoin in Argentina is increasing. Martin Tetaz, a lawmaker from Buenos Aires, suggested that citizens should keep their savings in BTC instead of USD or pesos. The Buenos Aires government recently attempted to secure a new loan from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which led to accelerated regulation of cryptocurrencies in the country.
It remains to be seen whether Argentina will decide to adopt Bitcoin as its official currency. Discussions about the benefits and risks of such a shift are in full swing as politicians and lawyers continue to make their case publicly.
