Interpol figures out how to monitor the Metaverse - Metaverse

The International Criminal Police Organization Interpol is working on how to monitor the Metaverse, a digital world projected as an alternative to the real world. Interpol Secretary General Jürgen Stock believes that the organization must be ready for this task in order not to be left behind by the metaverse and the technology associated with it.

Interpol is preparing to monitor the Metaverse

Police organizations face difficulties in adopting specific policies to enforce the law in the metaverse. However, Jürgen Stock, the secretary general of the International Criminal Police Organization Interpol, believes that the organization must be ready to take action against crimes that occur in the digital world.

The organization is currently preparing to bring its operation to Metaverse platforms, which are already being used by some groups to commit crimes. In an interview with the BBC, Stock specified:

Criminals are sophisticated and professional at adapting very quickly to any new technological tool available to commit crimes. We have to respond to this adequately. Sometimes legislators, police and our society lag behind.

These crimes currently happening in the Metaverse include verbal harassment, attacks, and others including ransomware, counterfeiting, money laundering, and financial fraud. However, some of these are still in legal gray areas.

Crimes in the Metaverse

According to Dr. According to Madan Oberoi, Interpol's executive director for technology and innovation, one of the biggest problems the organization is currently facing is determining whether or not an act constitutes a crime in the metaverse. He acknowledged that there are still difficulties in this regard, stating:

When you look at the definitions of these crimes in physical space and try to apply them to the metaverse, there is a difficulty. We don't know whether we can call them crimes or not, but these threats are definitely there, so these problems still need to be solved.

For Oberoi, one thing is certain: in order to monitor the Metaverse, Interpol must have contact and be present on Metaverse platforms. Because of this, the organization already has its own place in the metaverse that was inaugurated during its 90th General Assembly in New Delhi in October.

Interpol's Metaverse platform also serves another goal by enabling online courses to be offered to members of the armed forces in other countries and allowing them to directly practice the skills they have acquired in the Metaverse.
