Embattled lawyer Kyle Roche is facing the fallout from secret video recordings in which he said crypto developer Ava Labs paid him to harm competitors via class action lawsuits.
Bloomberg Law reported on Wednesday that Roche Freedman, the company he co-founded, has severed ties with Roche and he no longer has a stake there. Its website confirms the development, as the name “Roche” has been dropped to include “Freedman Normand Friedland.”
To LinkedIn and Twitter, Roche remains listed as a partner at Roche Freedman. The law firm and Roche did not respond to Blockworks' request for comment by press time.
Roche requested last month to withdraw as counsel from several class-action lawsuits. However, in response to the leaked videos, the targets' legal representatives also called for the entire law firm to be removed.
The alleged agreement required Roche to sue “half of the companies in this space” with the aim of obtaining sensitive internal information while diverting scrutiny from Ava Labs, the blockchain studio behind Ethereum and Solana competitor Avalanche.
Roche should do this in exchange for AVAX tokens and equity. Both Ava Labs CEO Emin Gün Sirer and Roche have denied the allegations.
On October 13, a US judge ousted Roche Freedman from representing investors in a Class action lawsuit Tether is accused of market manipulation. Reuters pointed out that the domain name “ www.freedmannormand.com “ was registered on the same day as the judge’s order.
Tether said it was pleased with the “well-reasoned decision” to exclude the law firm as an attorney.
"Roche Freedman's repeated attempts to trivialize and distance himself from Kyle Roche's despicable statements describing unethical behavior have not been the least bit convincing," the company said in a Statement.
Kyle Roche is not the only lawyer receiving tokens from Ava Labs
Roche Freedman has launched more than a dozen class action lawsuits against major crypto players. As of December 2019, Roche was entitled to 19% of the law firm's equity.
Elliott Greenfield, a legal representative for Tether, previously claimed that others at the law firm were involved in Ava Labs and may still own significant amounts of AVAX tokens.
However, a memorandum of understanding revealed as part of a dispute between Roche Freedman and former equity partner Jason Cyrulnik shows that Roche was the sole lawyer responsible for the Ava Labs deal.

Still, the document shows the share of an undisclosed amount of AVAX tokens distributed to other lawyers, including founding partners Devin “Velvel” Freedman and Cyrulnik, who received 32% and 25% of the loot, respectively.
Roche received 28%, and the remaining 15% was distributed evenly among three other lawyers at the firm, according to the filing.
