Binance Refutes ChatGPT-related Claims of Chinese Communist Party Ties (Report)

The world's largest cryptocurrency exchange - Binance - claimed that someone used ChatGPT to introduce Changpeng Zhao (CEO of the company) as an official of the Chinese Communist Party.

Some experts have warned that recent developments in artificial intelligence (AI) could have a disruptive impact on journalism. Others warned that ChatGPT could be used to create fake media stories and fake content to control the opinion of wider society.

Simple fact-checking could reveal the truth

According to recentcover, an unknown individual or company used the popular AI program ChatGPT to portray CZ as a member of the Chinese Communist Party. The speculation continued that he had developed a social media platform for the China National Petroleum Corporation (a state-owned oil and gas organization and one of the largest energy companies in the world).

Patrick Hillmann – CSO of Binance – said he tried to replicate the ChatGPT query but to no avail. He used questions like “Is Changpeng Zhao a communist?” and other expressions relating to the Petroleum Corporation. The program pointed to a fake LinkedIn page for Zhao and a Forbes webpage from 2018 that claimed he had some ties to the ruling party in China.

Nonetheless, the article is currently displaying a "not found" error, and it remains unknown when the media outlet published the story or if it ever existed.

Binance, which has insisted that the CEO has no connection to the Chinese government, further described Zhao's alleged role in the state-owned energy giant as "ridiculous." The language model suggests he was part of the China National Petroleum Corporation in high school, the company added.

“It is particularly sad to see this type of misinformation being shared by a few people in power when even the most basic fact-checking would have exposed it,” Hillman said.

While AI and ChatGPT have quickly penetrated various sectors and made operations easier for some companies, several experts have warned about the potential dangers such technology could pose.

Professor Charlie Beckett – a former BBC journalist who currently leads an AI program at the London School of Economics –maintainedThe technology is difficult to implement in journalism. He believes human editing and fact-checking should remain key elements in the profession:

“For newsrooms that believe it is unethical to publish lies, it is difficult to implement the use of a ChatGPT without a lot of accompanying human editing and fact-checking,” says Beckett.

Another false rumor about CZ

Aside from allegedly being a member of the Chinese Communist Party, a Bloomberg article recently introduced the Binance CEO as a multi-billionaire with a fortune of over $28 billion. CZexposedThe report claiming his net worth is nowhere near the figures described.

"Absolutely not. I'm a small potato in a small (but growing) industry," the executive said.

He also refuted speculation that he saw the now-bankrupt FTX as a rival (as the media company claimed). CZ said he has always welcomed new exchanges that properly conduct their operations in the crypto industry.
