Missouri resident sentenced to 5 years probation after shooting at Bitcoin ATM: report
Matthew Klinger – a 51-year-old resident of Jefferson City, Missouri – received five years of supervised probation after admitting to shooting a handgun at a Bitcoin ATM.
It's unclear whether the machine had any defects, but he said he did it "so it couldn't take money from anyone else."
So close to a prison sentence
Current reportinginformedthat last August, Klinger arrived at Vapor Maven on Missouri Boulevard and asked to speak to the general manager of the store (where the ATM was located). After hanging up, he picked up his pistol, fired five rounds into the machine and left the scene.
Klinger told investigators that after the violence he went home, confessed everything to his wife and called the police. He also left the gun on the porch of his home.
When asked about his motives for the shooting, he said he vandalized the Bitcoin ATM "so he couldn't take money from anyone else."
He pleaded guilty last week in Cole County to first-degree criminal damage to property and received five years of supervised probation. Such criminals are assigned to a law enforcement officer who monitors their actions and ensures that they comply with the court ruling. It is an alternative form of prison, but could turn into a prison sentence in case of misconduct.
The global spread of Bitcoin ATMs
The number of Bitcoin ATMs (ATMs) has increased significantly in recent years (driven primarily by the bull market and high interest in crypto in 2021). The first such machine saw the light of day in October 2013, and now it existsover 35,000.
The United States, where the above-mentioned shooting took place, is home to 32,650 Bitcoin ATMs and is the undisputed leader in this statistic. Canada is in second place with 2,669 and Australia is in third place with 276. Spain, Poland and El Salvador round out the top five.
In 2021 (when Bitcoin reached its all-time high of almost $70,000), more than 20,000 ATMs were set up. The madness even reached struggling economies, including Cambodia, Namibia, Venezuela, Lebanon and more, whose authorities allowed the assembly of such machines.
However, the extended crypto winter in 2022 slowed temperatures. AsCryptoPotatoreportedOnly 6,100 new ATMs were installed in the first 11 months of last year.
