Cypherpunk invests 50 million: Zcash is booming with Winklevoss support!

Cypherpunk Technologies, previously known as Leap Therapeutics, has realigned itself and is now focusing on the cryptocurrency Zcash (ZEC). In a strategic move, the company invested $50 million to acquire 203,775 ZEC tokens. This transition will be supported by a $58.88 million private placement offering led by Winklevoss Capital. With this new direction, Cypherpunk aims to actively participate in the Zcash community and influence the development of the protocol.

Will McEvoy of Winklevoss Capital has been named chief investment officer, while veteran digital asset investor Khing Oei has taken over as chairman of the company. In the current market landscape, Zcash has emerged as a strategic necessity for digital privacy in financial transactions. According to information from Crypto News Zcash has gained over 1,000% in value this year and is currently trading at around $477.

Current developments and market reactions

Recent market performance shows that ZEC reached a high of $723 on November 7th – its highest price since 2018 – before consolidating to around $477. Cypherpunk said the average purchase price for ZEC was $245.37, bringing the portfolio's value to around $97 million. This strategy could stabilize the company's financial security, especially as Cypherpunk reported a reduced net loss of $3.3 million in the third quarter of 2025, compared to $18.2 million in the same period last year.

At the end of the quarter, Cypherpunk had $9.7 million in cash, increased by its recent private offering. Before the transition, Leap Therapeutics specialized in the development of cancer therapies, including Phase 2 trials of sirexatamab. This highlights the extensive transformation the company is undergoing to compete in the fast-moving cryptocurrency landscape.

The future of Cypherpunk and its investment in Zcash raises questions about upcoming developments in the digital currency space and their potential impact on privacy in financial transactions. It remains to be seen how the company will pursue its goals and engage with the Zcash community.
