Data leak at 23andMe: Millions receive compensation of up to $10,000!
Millions of Americans face the possibility of receiving compensation of up to $11,875 per person. These payments result from a class action lawsuit against 23andMe that was filed following a serious data breach. The amount the company will provide will be between $30 and $50 million to compensate affected customers and regain public trust. This reports Daily Hodl.
The data breach was publicly announced in October 2023 and affected an estimated 6.4 million US citizens. Exposed information included the most sensitive data such as names, geographical locations as well as genetic information. The class action lawsuit was filed due to concerns about the handling of this data, which also included personal details such as ancestral birthplaces and family tree information.
Compensation details
Victims of the data breach have until February 17, 2026 to submit a claim for compensation. Settlement class members can receive up to $10,000 and a five-year subscription to a medical privacy service valued at $1,875. Those whose health information is implicated in the leak can receive up to $165, while members from certain states, including California, Illinois, Oregon or Alaska, can expect an estimated $100 per person.
The final approval hearing for this agreement will take place on January 20, 2026. Despite the financial settlement, 23andMe denies any wrongdoing and says ensuring privacy policies are a top priority. The company filed for bankruptcy in March and was sold to co-founder and former CEO Anne Wojcicki in June 2025 for $305 million. The company headquarters has since been renamed Chrome following the acquisition.
Impact on the company and affected customers
The data leak not only affected 23andMe's customers, but also questioned trust in the entire genetic testing industry. Many customers are concerned about the security of their personal and sensitive information, which could lead to a decline in user numbers. While 23andMe's compensation payments may recoup some of the damage, the long-term impact on the company and the industry will certainly be something to watch.
