Emergency call from the crypto world: WLFI saves $22 million after wallet attack!

World Liberty Financial (WLFI) conducted an emergency operation to recover 22.1 million WLFI tokens from compromised wallets on November 19, 2025. This was confirmed by on-chain data and was necessary after numerous wallets fell victim to phishing attacks as well as compromised seed phrases. These security breaches were found to be due to deficiencies in third-party security providers, rather than WLFI's contracts themselves, as crypto.news reported.

In September, WLFI had already frozen affected wallets and asked users to go through the KYC registration process again. To ensure user safety, new, secured wallet addresses have been collected for verified users. On November 19, WLFI burned approximately 166.667 million WLFI tokens from the compromised wallets and moved the same amount to the new, verified recovery addresses.

Emergency response and user education

The emergency function was developed specifically for situations in which users lose access to their wallets or tokens are obtained by attackers. WLFI took a cautious approach to avoid errors during the recovery process. Users who have successfully completed the verification process will receive their tokens in new wallets. Invalid Verified Wallets will continue to remain frozen until users initiate the recovery process.

The majority of affected wallets were compromised through phishing schemes and stolen keys, with some also linked to the EIP-7702-related issues during the Ethereum Pectra upgrade in September. WLFI had frozen a total of 272 wallets and issued warnings about fake support accounts and scams to protect users.

Regulatory challenges

WLFI is also facing regulatory inquiries, particularly from Senators such as Elizabeth Warren and Jack Reed, who have raised concerns about selling WLFI tokens to sanctioned companies. To date, WLFI has not responded to these allegations in recent statements. Despite these challenges, the project continues its work on a USD1 stablecoin and upcoming integrations and is ready to increase its development focus following the recovery process.
