Japan's e-commerce giant Rakuten launches NFT Marketplace

Hoping to capture some of the excitement around non-fungible tokens (NFTs), Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten has launched its own marketplace where users can buy, sell and trade them.

According to a Press release On Friday, the company announced that its Rakuten NFT platform is focused on NFTs in areas such as sports and entertainment, including music and anime.

The marketplace also offers a “one-stop” platform that allows intellectual property (IP) owners to create their own website for issuing and selling NFTs, the company said.

In the coming years, Rakuten plans to launch a peer-to-peer NFT issuance and sales service that supports IP holders worldwide to “drive the further development of a global market” for the digital medium.

NFTs are digital assets tied to blockchains that represent ownership of real or virtual goods.

Rakuten's marketplace debut comes at a time when trading and selling NFTs have continued to prove lucrative even as the broader cryptocurrency market suffers significant declines in value.

While daily sales volume for the virtual assets has declined from a peak of $422 million in August, the market was recently valued at between $20 billion and $40 billion.

Hoping to build on its recent foray into the crypto industry, Rakuten said it will release NFTs featuring illustrations by famous manga artists and video footage from TV Asashi, as well as digital trading cards.

Last year, the company opened up the ability for its users to pay with crypto at select merchants across Japan by enabling payments via Rakuten Pay and Rakuten Point Cards at point-of-sales terminals.
