Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has shared his opinion on the Metaverse and the impact the technology could have in the future. In a conversation with Klaus Schwab, Chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF), Nadella explained that the sense of presence achieved when interacting with Metaverse technology is “groundbreaking.”
Microsoft's Satya Nadella talks about the benefits of Metaverse
Satya Nadella, CEO of tech giant Microsoft, has declared his support for the metaverse, citing its potential to bring people together compared to other less interactive technologies. In one Conversation Speaking to World Economic Forum (WEF) Chairman Klaus Shwab at the Davos 2023 meetings, Nadella praised the benefits of using this technology.
Nadella explained:
For me, the most groundbreaking thing for this particular technology is the sense of presence you have when you interact even virtually.
Nadella believes that while Covid-19 has changed the landscape around meetings, forcing people to resort to video calls for these purposes, implementing more immersive technologies is a "very natural extension of that." For him, this is the true impact that the Metaverse and other technologies currently being developed can have on today's society.
Microsoft, WEF and the Metaverse
It was recently revealed that Microsoft was one of the WEF's partners in the development of the Global Collaboration Village, a virtual recreation of Davos in the Metaverse. The goal of this digital world is to enable the organization to bring together leaders from around the world to be part of an ongoing conversation about policy and world issues. This would serve to make the Davos meetings, which usually take place over the course of a week, a permanent event in the metaverse.
According to Schwab, 70 or 80 companies are already behind this initiative, which is being built using Mesh, a Metaverse component that works with Teams, a team meeting application from Microsoft. Nadella was excited about the possibilities of this platform and said:
Using this metaverse technology and these immersive experiences to bring the world together, to have both this sense of community presence and collaboration, I think is absolutely necessary.
Microsoft has been actively investing in Metaverse-related initiatives and shifting resources to connect part of its tech stack to improve digital worlds. In October the company announced It worked on adapting its cloud platform for use in Metaverse applications.
In contrast to Nadella's views, Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates sees it said in a recent Reddit Ask-Me-Anything (AMA) session that he currently prefers artificial intelligence (AI) technology over Web3 and Metaverse technologies. In addition, Microsoft is given $10 billion investment for Openai, creators of GPT-3 (Chatgpt).
