This year's Miss Universe contestant from El Salvador surprised viewers by showcasing Bitcoin as part of her national costume. El Salvador has adopted the cryptocurrency as legal tender and adopted a new regulatory framework for the issuance of its long-awaited Bitcoin-backed Volcano bonds.

Miss Universe 2023 candidate from El Salvador, Alejandra Guajardo, surprised viewers with her choice of costume on Wednesday evening. Guajardo took the stage at the 71st Miss Universe National Costume Show in a costume depicting "the evolution of the Salvadoran currency," as the official Miss Universe El Salvador Instagram account described, adding that the outfit was designed by Francisco Guerrero.

Miss El Salvador's national costume features cocoa beans, the colon, the US dollar and the Bitcoin symbol. Cocoa was originally used as a means of payment in El Salvador. The colón became the official currency of El Salvador from 1892 until it was replaced by the US dollar in January 2001. The predominant colors of the costume are gold, silver and bronze.

Now Bitcoin is legal tender in El Salvador alongside the US dollar. El Salvador became the first country to adopt the world's largest cryptocurrency as legal tender in September 2021. Since then, the country, led by pro-Bitcoin President Nayib Bukele, has done so bought Thousands of Bitcoin for his treasury. On Wednesday, the Salvadoran Legislative Assembly passed the digital asset issuance law proposed last November. It includes a new regulatory framework for the issuance of Bitcoin-backed Volcano bonds. “This new digital asset regulatory framework paves the way for the highly anticipated Volcano token issuance,” it said Bitfinex which will be a technology provider for the nation's Volcano token.
