Samsung, the Korean electronics company, has revealed that it is working on building its own Metaverse and extended reality devices, hinting at the possibility of launching a VR headset in the near future. TM Roh, head of Samsung's mobile experience business, explained that the device is being developed in partnership with Google and Qualcomm.
Samsung is entering the Metaverse hardware business
Samsung, the Korean mobile phone company, revealed it will soon enter the Metaverse and VR (virtual reality) headsets market. The company announced that it is already working on so-called “extended reality” hardware, suggesting the production of a VR headset.
TM Roh, Head of Samsung Mobile Experiences Business, confirmed that such a device was in the works, but did not offer a launch window for the hardware. However, he reported the involvement of Qualcomm, the fabless chip maker, and Google as a partner. On February 1, Roh told The Washington Post:
Many different companies... have made these announcements about different realities, so we too have made similar preparations, no less than anyone else.
Ro explained that Samsung has delayed its entry into the market, stating that the market is not yet ready and other similar devices launched by competitors have not met with the expected success.
More VR devices
Samsung joins the ranks of manufacturers that have already launched Metaverse devices, such as Meta and HTC, and others that plan to do so in the near future, such as Apple. Ro explained that Samsung's new device will be powered by a Qualcomm chip specifically designed for better performance in virtual reality applications and will use an operating system supported by Google.
Samsung's determination to enter a crowded market could respond to a push to expand away from traditional smartphones and into something more. Nokia, another phone technology company, predicted This metaverse technology will replace smartphones in the second half of this decade.
In contrast, Ro believes that this new family of devices poses no threat to what smartphones offer today. He explained:
Smartphones will continue to build on the features and needs of consumers and offer even more new experiences.
For Roh, there may be an integration between Metaverse and smartphones to complement their experiences and grow from there. Samsung's involvement in the Metaverse is not new, as the company has done before several Investments on projects in the area.
